As an American concerned with recent events, I in no way attempting to imitate the actions of our forefathers, but to emphasize their sound reasoning which held this country together for over 200 years, through revolutionary, civil, and world wars. The question simply presents itself; at what point is it necessary for government to regulate principles of society at its most basic levels, family and self? According to Thomas Paine “the design and end of government” is namely” freedom and security”. Never in my life as a young man or adult did I ever consider that perhaps someday the acting government of the free United States of America would take it upon themselves to use their basic purpose of security to PROTECT ME FROM MYSELF. The idea so intrigues me making it incomprehensible that government would even ponder interfering in such basic everyday personal actions and decisions as bank loans and nationalized health care. Am I as an adult not capable of making these decisions for myself? Or perhaps am I willing to trade natural freedoms for easiness of life at the cost of giving up power to a corrupt and disintegrating body of leadership.
Let us take for example the MOTGAGE CRISIS, or so it was deemed by the government. Envision a young family of a man and woman living together, both working, and both making an average salary, living in average housing, driving an average car. Now said family is given the opportunity to take out an adjustable rate mortgage and live in a new dream house. For the moment the couple is content but this trend continues in popularity and suddenly all young couples desire to live in the same conditions and the housing market booms. Prices flourish and said young couple sees the value of their home increase and takes out a second mortgage to finance their newer car and boat. Soon the excitement faces reality and the financing of the family is stretched too far. First the boat goes then the car, and ultimately they lose their house and face bankruptcy. Who is at fault? Is it not the government who is at fault for not protecting those innocent buyers who couldn’t conjure up the mental power to foresee the instability of living a dream life founded on a weak base of average income? Should not the government have stepped in to protect this couple from destroying their own lives? Is it me or is this not the thought process of millions of Americans willing to put the blame on others for their own mistakes. Now we have given up more of our freedoms to ensure that a system is put in place by the government to oversee the criminals of the banking industry who forced us as a society to make poor decisions.
Is it not painfully clear that we are resting our hopes and our desires for a better life on the shoulders of an innately corrupt system? As a fellow American I am disappointed in the people of this country who have become so disillusioned to forget that each time we allow the government to step in and control a situation we surrender invaluable freedoms which were gained through the shedding of blood by men who believed in a brighter future for this country. From the tyranny of corrupt leaders they rose and fought for their natural rights paving the way for a happier and free people, a people who now willingly give up those rights destroying the legacy of our Founding Fathers. Let us not be caught in a stupor of thought not knowing what to do. Press forward and voice your opinion, stop the poor decision making and let us regain what is already lost.
